2022.06.04. – 06.05 – Egg tempera – “Millennial Painting Techniques

The egg tempera chapter of “Millennial Painting Techniques – Painting Studies Based on Period Master Copies” is organized for two Saturdays in January and a full weekend in February. We get to know the characteristic painting techniques, materials and tools of the Italian Gothic and early Renaissance trecento-quattrocento, complemented with art history.

Participants will be able to adorn their home collection with a masterpiece, copied from a period master painter, building from the very foundation up to the finished work. We recommend this to all those who want to get a “behind-the-scenes” insight into the exploration of the historical development of painting. No training is required!

The essence of the course is not on the age-accurate copy, but on the experience with which the famous masters of different ages created the visual effect achieved with different layers of paint and brushstrokes. This is done by following periodic descriptions, experimenting with pigments mixtures and different media. With the knowledge and experience of the painting materials aquired here, we can more easily navigate the unfolding of our own painting individuality in the future.

Our goal is to develop the personal abilities, creativity and individual vision of all our participants. Our instructors are flexible in taking individual and group needs into account and can modify the topics to suit them. The table below contains the topics and activities in a daily breakdown.

No training is required to participate. We direct each participant towards their own goal, taking into account their individual preparation and knowledge.

During the course we will get acquainted with an ancient painting technique: egg tempera, where the earth colors of pigments, ie powder paints, shine through the painting. From the 13th century Italian painting period, we can learn the secret recipes of the painting techniques of the early renaissance through the masterpieces of Giotto, Cimabue.

We will COPY selected paintings from the works of famous artists of given artistic periods. Each time we start with a short overview and projection of the given period, then we mix the colored pigment powder with the binders of the studied artistic peirod. The focus of the course now is not on the independent creation of the painting, but – through a joyful creative process – to get inspiration from the endless possibilities of the period’s materials and techniques. Of course, the tangible experience of success will not be missed either, and you will be able to take home one classic painting on a wooden board.

Beáta Erdős restorer

She was born into an artist family, and studied art in Paris and the Netherlands from 1989 to 2011.

She studied painting restoration at the Sorbonne University in Paris. During her 16 years abroad, she worked with a number of galleries and museums (Musée du Louvre, Fondation Wildenstein, Petit Palais, Chateaux de Loires…). She studied various archaic art painting techniques at J. Hermil’s School of Painting in Paris, which she has been teaching for several years since.

She won a special award from the Fondation de France in 1994. Her solo exhibitions have been held in Versailles (1993- GalerieGeode), Paris (1995- Center d’Animation 17th) and many cities in France, among others.

She has also been involved in painting therapy since 2005 (studies: Holland- Fondation Emerald).

Within a small group (7-10 people), we provide individual support for the acquisition of technical knowledge and workshop secrets. During the independent creative work, our instructor gives personalized corrections and advice.

In the future, we plan to launch an advanced course to further develop the acquired period painting techniques, to display your own visual world individually.
